Financing a Motorcycle? Here's What Your Lender Will Require

Buying a motorcycle with financing changes your insurance situation in a way a lot of first-time buyers don't expect. The state sets a minimum for legal riding. Your lender sets its own, separate requirement to protect its interest in the bike, and the two are not the same thing.

Why lenders ask for more than the state minimum

When you finance a motorcycle, the lender has a financial stake in it until the loan is paid off. State-required liability insurance protects other people, not the bike itself, which means it does nothing to protect the lender's investment if the motorcycle is totaled or stolen. That's why financed bikes typically come with a lender requirement for collision and comprehensive coverage on top of whatever the state mandates.

What collision and comprehensive actually add

Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your motorcycle after an accident, regardless of fault. Comprehensive coverage handles non-collision events like theft, fire, or weather damage. Together, they're what actually protects the bike itself, which is exactly what a lienholder cares about until the loan is satisfied. Once the loan is paid off, you can typically decide for yourself whether to keep or drop that coverage, though for a lot of riders it still makes sense to keep it.

Read your loan paperwork, not just your policy

Lenders often specify not just that you need collision and comprehensive, but sometimes minimum coverage limits or a maximum deductible. It's worth reading that section of your financing agreement directly rather than assuming your policy already lines up with it. A mismatch can technically put you in default on the loan, even if you have a valid insurance policy.

Getting the coverage right from day one

The easiest time to set this up correctly is before you ride the bike off the lot, not after a lender flags a gap. Our coverage guide walks through how liability, collision, and comprehensive work together on a financed bike.
